Travelling with heavy luggage can be stressful, and a waste of time and money. Once you get to the airport and your baggage is overweight, you have to make one of two infuriating choices: pay extra for the weight on top of the allowable, or get rid of a few items you most likely won’t need.
Hold the pitchforks, I know you feel like everything in your luggage is absolutely necessary but believe me, there is a lot of stuff in their that you don’t actually need. Now this may be tricky if you’re already in the airport with nowhere to safekeep your things. Perhaps hiring an airport locker may be your best bet. But if you actually drove to the airport or secured your vehicle in a nearby airport parking, then all you have to do is leave a few things in your car for the duration of your holiday. But if you want to go hassle-free, you’re going to want to go through this quick list before heading out the door.
Bring Small Containers
If you want to bring different types of toiletries with you on your trip (e.g. shampoo, conditioner, liquid bath soap, etc.), transfer some on empty prescription bottles. They are sturdy, light, and easy to carry.
Roll Your Clothes
Roll your clothes before putting them inside the bag. This way, your clothes won’t take up too much space. All you have to do is fold it in half, roll the shoulders down to the bottom, and you’re good to go!
Transfer Your Makeup to Smaller Containers
Packing makeup when travelling can be such a pain, as heavy bottles of foundation, primer, concealer, highlighter, contour, etc., can take so much space. Spare yourself some trouble by putting liquids, creams, and powders in empty contact lens carriers. This way, you only bring the
Mix and Match
Bring clothes that would easily complement each other. Stick to the basics and bring along neutral-colored clothes like black, white, gray, and beige. The rule is that you should be able to match at least three tops per pair of bottoms brought.
Layer Up
Even if you’re going to a cold place, bring layers instead of bulk. But if you really need, let’s say, a winter coat, wear the bulkiest items of clothing and shoes (such as jackets and boots) instead of stuffing them into your luggage. This way, you’ll have more space to store smaller items in your bag.
Maximize the Use of Your Shoes
Use your shoes as an extra storage. You can put most smaller items in there like socks and small pouches. Make sure your shoes are clean, though!
Double Check
Finally, sort your things and go over them again. See if you really need to bring that top or that bottle of lotion. Trust me, this works. Even the smallest thing adds up to your baggage, so it’s better to check over and over again.
